About
The InnovATE/Armenia project contributes to the USAID/Armenia objective of promoting economic growth by assisting the development of a workforce trained to increase the competitiveness of Armenia’s agriculture sector. To do this, we are partnering with the International Center for Agribusiness Research and Education (ICARE) Agribusiness Teaching Center to build human, financial and institutional capacities. The goal is to support the Agribusiness Teaching Center in becoming a sustainable and modern center of excellence for teaching, outreach and research for Armenia and the region.
The InnovATE project facilitates innovation, supports knowledge management based on best practices, and builds institutional capacity. We engage existing expertise of ICARE while also drawing on experience of the Armenian agribusiness sector and the consortium of U.S. land grant universities implementing USAID Feed-the-Future InnovATE project led by Virginia Tech.

On February 3, 2017, 30 senior students of the Agribusiness Teaching Center’s undergraduate program and a staff member of the International Center for Agribusiness Research and Education (ICARE) received certificates from Penn State and Virginia Tech universities for successful completion of the first Food Safety Systems Management course in Armenia. The intensive program seeks to improve the safety of Armenia’s food supply chain from crop production and processing to packaging, handling, marketing, and consumption. These students were the First Graduates of Food Safety Systems Management Certificate Program!
On January 9, 2017 the Food Safety Program Launched! After nearly two years of intense preparation, with support from USAID and the InnovATE/Armenia project (led by Project Director Angela Neilan), ICARE launched a Food Safety Systems Management (FSSM) Professional Certificate Program. The condensed hands-on course includes six modules to be taught during four weeks (one module for each week): Introduction to Food Safety, HACCP, Sanitation, Food Microbiology, Better Process Control Systems, and Food Defense.
ANAU Rector Visits Virginia Tech President from September 22nd to 23rd, 2016. The productive meetings formed a partnership between both universities. President Sands, of Virginia Tech, affirmed the relationship’s importance to the school’s vision as a global university that offers students international experiences. Rector Tarverdyan said ANAU could be a “partnership hub” for Virginia Tech and a gateway to the Caucasus and Central Asia regions to help Virginia Tech fulfill its global vision.
The Memorandum of Understanding with Penn State was signed by Amenian National Agrarian University (ANAU) Rector, Arshaluys Tarverdyan and ICARE Director Vardan Urutyan, and Dr. Richard Roush, Dean of the College of Agriculture at Penn State. The Memorandum launches curriculum development, student and faculty exchange, and joint research activities to benefit both universities
Virginia Tech strengthens bonds with Armenian university when Virginia Tech President, Tim Sands, and Armenian National Agrarian University (ANAU) Rector, Arshaluys Tarverdyan, created a partnership for future travel and study abroad opportunities for students and faculty.
